1850 U.S. Census in Shelburne, Franklin County, Massachusetts

The population of Shelburne in 1850 was 1239, including 609 white males, 629 white females, and one colored female. There were 242 households, in 236 dwelling-houses. The one colored female, aged 110(?), was the oldest person in Shelburne. She was Kate Van Vottenling(?), born in New York state and living in the household of Willis L. Shearer.

Many of the households were extended families including grandchildren, aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, and in-laws. Many households included unrelated boarders, especially males aged 15-25 who worked as laborers.

Principal surnames among the 1239 individuals were BARDWELL (61), DOLE (47), FISK (40), BARNARD (34), MERRILL and SEVERANCE (33 each), LONG (30), WELLS (26), ANDERSON (25), SMITH (24), ALVORD and HAWKS (23 each), JONES and PRATT (19 each), PECK and WILLSON (18 each), GOODNOW (17), NEWTON (16), NEWELL (15), KEMP and NIMS (14 each), BRIGGS (13), ALLEN and KELLOGG (12 each), CONANT and LAMSON (11 each); CARPENTER, FELLOWS, and WARE (10 each).

The principal owners of real estate were Henry WELLS ($12,000); Orsamus BARDWELL and Solomon SMEAD ($10,000 each); John ANDREWS and Asa SEVERANCE and John STEELE ($8000 each); Ebenezer LAMSON and Abner PECK ($7000 each); Nathaniel LAMSON ($6800); William LONG Jr. ($6500); Warren ALLEN, Robert ANDERSON, George W. CARPENTER, Solomon HAWKS, Zera HAWKS, Joseph MERRILL, Ruel SEVERANCE and Joseph SWEET ($6000 each); Ira BARNARD ($5400); Cephas ALVORD, Zenas BARDWELL, Isaac DOLE, George FARNSWORTH, David FISK, Henry M. FISK, Samuel FISK, Benjamin MAXWELL, Peter PECK, Charles TANTOR, John S. TAYLOR and Abraham WILCOX ($5000 each).
