about 1920?
Crawford House, Crawford Notch, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Cordeanio Harley Merrill (1840-1908) was the hotel manager
from about 1872 to 1903. During that period, Crawford House was a favorite vacation spot
with wealthy East Coast families, who would arrive by train with their servants to spend
the entire summer. With the advent of the automobile and the spread of inexpensive motels,
the hotel could not compete, and finally closed its doors in 1976. The vacant hotel burned
to the ground in 1977.
